Police nab hundreds in Kliprivier crime clampdown

Operation Shanela 2 in the Kliprivier precinct led to 88 arrests, 31 undocumented persons detained, and multiple crime prevention.

A zero-tolerance Operation Shanela 2 garnered positive results in the Kliprivier policing precinct on May 21. The clampdown on crime was led by the acting District Commander Brigadier MJ Manamela and the Operational Commander Brigadier Sibongile Ndaba.

Boots on the ground included members from various teams, including Sedibeng District units, Trio Task Team, Infrastructure Task Team, K9 Unit, Crime Intelligence, working alongside Midvaal Traffic, Communication Unit, and other stakeholders.

During the operation, police executed several crime prevention activities which included 387 persons searched, 175 vehicles searched, 57 vehicles tested, five premises searched, three liquor outlets visited, five ATMs patrolled, two crime hotspots monitored, a filling station monitored, a taxi rank visit, a complex visited, a roadblock conducted, three vehicle Vehicle Check Points conducted, and spaza shops inspected.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela says traffic enforcement formed part of the operation, where 17 traffic fines amounting to R12 700 were issued for various traffic infringements.

“The operation resulted in the arrest of 31 undocumented persons. The suspects were processed under relevant immigration-related offences. District detectives also recorded significant operational successes with a total of 103 cases attended to, resulting in 88 arrests being effected.”

Crimes attended to included murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, assault GBH, common assault, domestic violence-related offences, rape, housebreaking, business burglary, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, as well as theft and contempt of court matters.

“Gender-based violence-related arrests stood at 15 cases involving assault, GBH, and rape-related offences. Members of the South African Police Service at Kliprivier SAPS further arrested one suspect for business burglary and two suspects for theft.”

The Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Manamela commended all law enforcement agencies and members involved for their continued dedication and commitment to combat crime in Sedibeng District.
