Man (22) arrested with illegal firearms and drugs in Boipatong

An intelligence-driven operation in Boipatong led to the arrest of a suspect found with firearms bearing filed serial numbers, drugs worth an estimated R10 000, and ammunition.

BOIPATONG – Firearms with filed serial numbers, 221 packets of nyaope, and four mandrax tablets were found in the possession of an arrested suspect in Boipatong.

This comes after members attached to Crime Intelligence Sedibeng District, working together with the Sedibeng TRT, operationalised information received from an informant regarding a suspect allegedly in possession of an illegal firearm and involved in drug-related activities on May 22.

According to the Sedibeng District Cluster police spokesperson, Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela, at approximately 03:00, the operational team proceeded to the identified address where a search operation was conducted.

“The suspect was immediately arrested and detained at Boipatong SAPS on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition as well as dealing in drugs,” she added.

Maxambela said the recovered items have an estimated street value of approximately R10 000.

“Police investigations are continuing, and the firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine whether they are linked to other crimes,” she said.

The Sedibeng District has since welcomed the arrest.

Acting District Commissioner Brigadier Mashole Manamela praised the members involved in the operation for their swift response and commitment to removing illegal firearms and drugs from communities.

Police investigations continue.
