Child Protection Week observed in Orange Farm
Through educational sessions, activities, and donations, stakeholders highlighted children's rights and the importance of collective action to prevent abuse, and neglect.
ORANGE FARM – In efforts to highlight children’s rights as outlined in the Constitution of South Africa, the Sebokeng Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit observed Child Protection Week at the Thato Kematla Orphanage in Orange Farm on May 27.
Under the theme “Working together in ending violence against children,” the unit partnered with various stakeholders including Social Development, Men as Safety Promoters (MASP), National FCS, Sedibeng FCS, SAPS Orange Farms, Provincial Corporate Communication, Provincial Social Crime Prevention, Women’s Network, Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department, Spar, Pick n Pay, Community Policing Forum, and community members at large. The event boasted educational sessions where children were taught about their rights, fun activities, and a gifting ceremony.
Speaking to Ster North, Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela says, “The National Child Protection Week officially kicks off from May 29 to June 5. Child Protection Week aims to create awareness on child abuse, neglect, and exploitation, and address safety in homes, schools, as well as digital platforms.”
Maxambela explains that the orphanage has been home to about 30 children for 20 years and, until a year ago, operated without funding. “Following the information session shared with children and guests, our sponsors gifted children with essential items such as school backpacks, toiletries, clothes, underwear, and teddy bears.”
Maxambela says the day fostered a spirit of unity and the promotion of children’s rights in communities, reiterating the African proverb It takes a village to raise a child.
