VANDERBIJLPARK – A dramatic daylight robbery occurred at a shopping centre this morning when three armed men targeted security guards who were transporting money to an ATM at the Vaal Gate shopping centre.
According to information at Ster’s disposal, the suspects allegedly confronted the guards while they were carrying cash to the ATM and robbed them of two firearms before fleeing the scene in a white Volkswagen Polo.
An alarm was quickly triggered, which led to a shootout between the suspects and the driver of the cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle.
Police and private security personnel rushed to the scene to provide backup.
In response to Ster’s inquiries, Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed that no cash was stolen during the incident and no injuries were reported.
She stated that police are investigating a case of armed robbery as the suspects managed to flee the scene with the two stolen firearms.
This incident comes just two days after another foiled armed robbery shocked the area.
On Wednesday, a group of armed suspects raided three stores at the Vaal Mall shopping complex.
Following a dramatic police chase, those suspects crashed into a road sign, abandoned their vehicle, and escaped on foot.
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing.
