Tshabalala officially sworn in as Ward 28 councillor

Maki Tshabalala has been sworn in as Ward 28 councillor in Emfuleni after securing the DA’s first 100% township ward victory in Gauteng.

The DA’s Maki Tshabalala has been officially sworn in as the new Ward Councillor for Ward 28, taking the oath of office to serve the communities of Beverly Hills, Evaton Extension, and Ext 15.

The 61-year-old, who previously served as a DA proportional representation councillor for four years, made history in May by securing the first 100% township ward victory for her party.

DA Emfuleni Caucus Leader Duncan Mthembu congratulated Councillor Tshabalala, stating that residents have entrusted her to represent them and that she has the full support of the DA caucus.

“Ward 28 is the first 100% township ward that the DA has won in Gauteng. We are confident that Clr Tshabalala will continue to serve the community of Ward 28 with dedication and integrity.”

The party’s support in the area grew significantly from 14.21% in 2021 to 32.36 %, while the ANC dropped from 50.90% to 32.14%.

Kingsol Chabalala, the DA’s Emfuleni Local Municipality mayoral candidate, described the election as a historic moment for Emfuleni, adding that the victory shows communities are ready for change, accountable leadership, and a government that puts residents first.

“This victory is not just for the DA, it is for every resident who believes Emfuleni deserves better service delivery, safer communities, job opportunities, and leaders who listen.”

Describing her swearing-in ceremony as a surreal moment, Tshabalala said it symbolised that the real work had begun to provide better services to the voters who entrusted her with their support.

“There are many issues relating to infrastructure in my ward. We have started cleaning up dumping sites in the area.”

She promised to address all community issues with diligence to ensure that the quality of life improves for the people of Ward 28.
