Wide Horizon presents a new era for palliative care
Wide Horizon Hospice has officially reopened under the management of Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services, ushering in a new era of compassionate care, local job creation, and community-driven initiatives.
Wide Horizon Hospice has officially entered a new and hopeful chapter following its acquisition by Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services. This move is already making a meaningful difference in both healthcare services and local job creation in the Vaal region.
The transition was formally confirmed during a recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the Wide Horizon Hospice premises. The meeting introduced the newly appointed board members who will guide the organisation into its next phase of service delivery. Financial reports and governance matters were also presented, reflecting a commitment to transparency and stability during the handover process.
The hospice has officially reopened under new management at a community-focused launch event attended by dedicated staff and volunteers from Stepping Stone and Wide Horizon, healthcare professionals, local stakeholders, and residents who have long supported hospice care in the region.

Among the guests of honour were Motsoane Motlalentoa, CEO of the Association of Palliative Care Centres (APCC), Mary-Anne Myburgh, MMC for Community Services, and Midvaal Ward 4 Councillor. Also present were nurses and doctors from surrounding medical facilities, members of Vereeniging SAPS, and community members who gathered to celebrate the reopening and renewed purpose of the facility.
Cllr Myburgh commended the initiative and reaffirmed her commitment to supporting community upliftment projects. She further announced that she, together with a private partner, has pledged support for the development of a library at Wide Horizon Hospice, an addition intended to offer patients, families, and staff a peaceful space for learning, reflection, and comfort.
One of the most welcome outcomes of the reopening has been the creation of new employment opportunities for local community members. The jobs span various operational and support roles within the hospice and its associated services, offering much-needed relief in challenging economic times.
As part of the NPO’s [Wide Horizon] community-driven approach, the Pink Bin initiative was also introduced. These bins allow residents, schools, and businesses to donate pre-loved items, which will be sold through the Wide Horizon Charity Shop. The proceeds will go directly toward sustaining hospice services and expanding care for those in need.
The organisation has expressed a strong desire to build partnerships with other local NPOs, emphasising that collaboration is key to addressing the growing social and healthcare needs of the community. Schools and businesses across the region are also being encouraged to support the Pink Bin initiative by hosting collection points on their premises.
“The reopening of Wide Horizon marks more than just an administrative change; it represents a renewed promise to the community: compassionate care, local empowerment, and sustainable support for those facing life-limiting illness,” said Tersia Burger, Stepping Stone and Wide Horizon Hospice CEO.
Delivering the keynote address, Burger highlighted the deeper meaning behind the reopening.
She described it as a restoration of dignity, compassion, and access to care in the Vaal Triangle.
“I ask each person to not simply celebrate with us, but to become an ambassador for hospice care, speak about our work, visit our charity shops, support our fundraising initiatives, partner with us, volunteer, donate and advocate.
Wide Horizon Hospice welcomes the support of volunteers, donations of pre-loved items, and contributions of any kind that can help sustain its vital services and ensure that patients continue to receive compassionate care when they need it most.
Those wishing to lend a helping hand are encouraged to contact the hospice on 016 428 1410, WhatsApp 062 037 7161, or email fundraising@hospicevaal.co.za. Every act of kindness, no matter how big or small, helps make a difference.
