VANDERBIJLPARK – A scene of horror unfolded on Barrage Road on Wednesday morning following a devastating collision between a Greyhound bus and a minibus taxi that claimed multiple lives.
Twisted metal, shattered glass, plastic debris, and bodies covered with foil blankets lined the roadside.
The tragic crash occurred near the Palms Shopping Complex, bringing traffic to a standstill as emergency services, police, and rescue teams rushed to the scene.
According to information available to Ster, the Greyhound bus was travelling towards Vereeniging when it collided with a minibus taxi that was attempting to turn into Louis Trichardt Blvd. The impact reportedly caused the bus driver to lose control, resulting in the bus overturning.
Dozens of bystanders watched as paramedics fought to save lives while several bodies lay covered nearby. Scores of injured commuters were transported to local hospitals for treatment and observation.
A massive police presence, including members of the Vanderbijlpark SAPS and the Gauteng Accident Investigation Unit, remains on the scene.
