Thousand voices rise against drug abuse in Zamdela

More than 1 500 people united at Lehutso Primary School in Zamdela as the Free State Department of Education led a powerful stand against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

SASOLBURG – The Free State Department of Education stood shoulder to shoulder with learners, educators, parents, government departments, law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders as more than 1 500 participants gathered at Lehutso Primary School in Zamdela to commemorate International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26.

Held under the powerful theme, “Youth Unite Against Drug Use and Abuse, Illicit Trafficking in Defence of Our Democracy,” the provincial campaign reaffirmed a shared commitment to protecting young people from the devastating impact of substance abuse and criminal drug networks.

The programme, expertly directed by Ms V. Buka, began with a warm welcome from Angelina Mofokeng of Metsimaholo Local Municipality, followed by remarks from Eunice Qwelane, Acting Chief Director: Education Development and Support, who highlighted the importance of collective action in building safer learning environments.

The day featured informative and impactful presentations from key stakeholders.

Law enforcement also reinforced the message, with Warrant Officer L. Mokoena outlining the legal consequences of using, possessing, and selling drugs, while Adv. M. Lekeka from the National Prosecuting Authority highlighted the justice system’s role in combating drug-related crime.

One of the day’s most memorable moments was a powerful stage drama performed by learners, whose moving performance sent a clear message: Say no to drugs. Choose life. Choose your future.

Delivering the keynote address, MEC for Education Dr Mantlhake Maboya challenged young people to become ambassadors of hope, resilience and responsible citizenship. He called on communities to unite in creating environments where every child can thrive free from the dangers of drugs and illicit trafficking.

The campaign demonstrated that defeating substance abuse requires an integrated approach involving education, healthcare, social development, law enforcement, families and communities working together.

Together, we are building safer schools, stronger communities and a brighter future for the youth of the Free State.
