VANDERBIJLPARK.- A former Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) fleet manager has been arrested over an alleged vehicle tender fraud and corruption scandal.

The Gauteng Political Killings Task Team arrested the 42-year-old suspect.

National Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the arrest and said it relates to the irregular awarding and implementation of a municipal vehicle fleet tender.

A service provider was allegedly paid approximately R16m in full to deliver 18 municipal vehicles, including UD trucks and bakkies.

“Investigations revealed that only seven of the contracted vehicles were delivered to the municipality, despite full payment allegedly having been made to the service provider,” Mathe explained.

The former fleet boss is expected to appear in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face charges of fraud and corruption.

Mathe added that the investigation remains ongoing and further arrests have not been ruled out.
