Midvaal Libraries recently hosted a successful Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) Programme to inspire young minds and expose learners to the exciting opportunities.

MMC Councillor Mary-Anne Myburgh delivered a keynote address that emphasised the importance of education in the development of today’s society. She further highlighted the vital role of technology in shaping the future. Her inspiring words set the tone for a day dedicated to exploration, innovation, and learning.

The programme brought together learners, educators, industry experts, academic professionals and various organisations committed to promoting innovation, creativity and future-ready skills among young people.

One of the highlights of the programme was an insightful presentation delivered by Professor Mashilo Modiba from the University of South Africa (UNISA), focusing on the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on society.

The presentation explored how AI is transforming the way people live, work, and interact, while emphasising the importance of responsible and ethical decision-making when using emerging technologies.

To contextualise these developments, the presentation also discussed the advent of the 5th Industrial Revolution (5IR), which is characterised by the fusion of advanced digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and human-centric innovations.

The 5IR marks a new era where technological integration aims to create more sustainable, inclusive, and intelligent systems that enhance human potential and address global challenges.

The programme created a platform for learners to engage with various STEAM-related organisations and industry partners. Among the exhibitors and participants were Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, LewaTech, Eduvos, DUT, and other role players within the technology and innovation space, who showcased their work and shared information about career opportunities available in STEAM-related industries.

In addition to presentations and exhibitions, the event featured an engaging quiz and a project competition, where participating schools had the chance to win a laptop and tablets sponsored by the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture, and Recreation. These initiatives aim to further stimulate interest in STEAM fields and support learners’ educational journeys.

The STEAM Programme forms part of Midvaal Libraries’ commitment to support lifelong learning, digital literacy and community development by creating platforms where learners can access knowledge, explore new ideas and discover career pathways.

The event was a celebration of curiosity, creativity and innovation, reinforcing the message that libraries are not only spaces for books, but also dynamic learning hubs that prepare communities for the future.
