Constable Neo Sedi has been hailed for going above and beyond the call of duty after he operationalised intelligence and coordinated a multi-disciplinary, intelligence-driven operation that resulted in the seizure of illicit cigarettes and the arrest of a suspect in Vanderbijlpark.

The officer attached to the Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) in Vereeniging received intelligence while off duty on July 25. After obtaining authorisation from management to follow up on the information, the member collaborated with members of the SSG High Risk Unit, who responded promptly.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Thembeka Maxambela says, “The team proceeded to the identified premises where the occupant voluntarily granted consent for a search. The search resulted in the discovery of eight brown boxes containing illicit cigarettes. The cigarettes comprised Remington Gold and Chief Blue, with each box containing 500 packets of 20 cigarettes.”

Maxambela says the suspect was informed of his constitutional rights and arrested for possession of illicit cigarettes.

The scene was processed by the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), where all exhibits were photographed, counted, and secured in accordance with SAPS procedures before being booked into the SAPS exhibit management system. The suspect was subsequently detained at Vanderbijlpark SAPS and will soon appear in court.

The Acting District Commissioner of Sedibeng District, Brigadier Mashole Manamela, commended the dedication, vigilance and commitment displayed by the SAPS and private security partners.

“The successful outcome of this operation demonstrates the importance of acting on credible information and the value of cooperation between SAPS members and responsible security partners in the fight against organised crime. We remain committed to disrupting the illicit trade, protecting the economy and ensuring that those involved in criminal activities are brought before the courts.”

Sedi says he has always been passionate about his career as it was a dream for him to be in law enforcement, not just a mere employment opportunity.

Police will continue with the investigation into the origin and distribution of illicit cigarettes. Members of the community are urged to continue reporting criminal activities. Police cite that information from residents helps in the continued fight against crime.
