SASOLBURG – An anti-gang operation has dealt a major blow to the local drug trade after four suspects were arrested during two separate police busts on August 3.
Officers from the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit carried out the intelligence-driven operation targeting local drug dealers.
Sergeant Josephine Rani, the police spokesperson for the Fezile Dabi District, explained that officers were patrolling the taxi rank near a shopping complex at about midday when they spotted two men allegedly selling drugs.
“During the search, police recovered six packets of crystal meth, 24 sachets of nyaope, and an undisclosed amount of cash. The two suspects were arrested,” said Rani.
Shortly afterwards, while still at the scene, officers received a tip-off about a Nigerian national allegedly selling drugs from a house in the town.
The team quickly went to the address and searched the property.
“The search resulted in the seizure of eight full mandrax tablets, four packets of crystal meth, and an undisclosed amount of cash. Two additional suspects were arrested,” she said
The four men, aged between 33 and 44, are due to appear in the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court to face charges of drug possession.
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing as they step up efforts to crack down on drug trafficking across the Fezile Dabi District.
