SASOLBURG – Police have launched a manhunt for a 37-year-old suspect who allegedly escaped from lawful custody while receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
Peter Nkosi was arrested after he allegedly broke into his former girlfriend’s home in Zamdela on August 20 and assaulted her.
According to police, community members intervened, apprehended Nkosi and contacted the police.
He was arrested for house robbery and later taken to hospital for medical attention, where police officers were deployed to guard him.
However, the suspect allegedly managed to outsmart the officers on Saturday afternoon.
Police said Nkosi was visited by friends who brought him clothes.
At about 15:10, the officers guarding him reportedly went to the bathroom.
Nkosi allegedly used the opportunity to escape from the hospital and remains at large.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Rani said the suspect is considered dangerous and urged members of the public not to confront him.
Police said Nkosi is originally from Mpumalanga and has three pending cases against him, including attempted murder, house robbery and escape from lawful custody.
Detectives are now appealing to the public to help bring him back into custody.
