Police arrest Sebokeng resident over unlicensed DSTV streaming operation

The man is charged with contravening the Cybercrimes Act.

A man from Sebokeng has been arrested for selling illegal DStv streaming services without a licence along the Golden Highway and in Zone 13.

The arrest followed a thorough police investigation into illegal streaming in the area. Acting on a tip-off on October 15, members of the Cyber Crime Unit and MultiChoice forensic investigators arrested the man for breaking Section 7 of the Cybercrimes Act.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane explained that test purchases were conducted with the suspect allegedly sending streaming codes to customers via WhatsApp.

“A search and seizure warrant was granted. The team conducted searches at two shops in Boitumelo and at the suspect’s residence in Zone 13. During the operation, several items believed to be linked to the illegal streaming activities were seized, including television boxes, receipt books, routers, a point-of-sale (POS) device, remote controls, advertising flyers, laptops and external hard drives.”

The suspect faces charges under the Cybercrimes Act. Mokhachane confirmed that they are also investigating possible money-laundering offences. The suspect is due to appear in the Sebokeng Magistrate’s Court soon.

Lieutenant Colonel Ngwaku Mokovhi, head of the Cyber Crime Unit, praised the team and highlighted the strong partnership between the police and MultiChoice.

Station Commander Brigadier Thembekile Kubone also commended the professionalism shown during the operation, stressing that teamwork between law enforcement and private companies is vital for fighting crime. She urged residents and business owners to obey the law and report any suspicious activities to the police.
