Scrap yard owner survives second attempt on his life

The shooting took place in broad daylight on Thursday morning in Walkerville along Old Johannesburg Road (R82).

WALKERVILLE. – The owner of a scrap yard business in De Deur survived a second attempt on his life on Thursday, May 2.

Dave Smit, owner of CSC Scrap Metals in De Deur, is understood to be in a critical but stable condition after being shot at least four times at the intersection of Randvaal Road (R550) and the R82, Old Johannesburg.

The incident happened around 06:18 in the morning and was caught on closed circuit cameras.

Sedibeng Ster learnt that Smit was on his way to work in his white Toyota Land Cruiser when the occupants of a silver Mercedes-Benz opened fire on him from the vehicle.

Smit was able to make a u-turn and flee in another direction.

On the video, one can see how the attackers seem to be chasing him.

Smit got away and was later treated at the emergency unit of a hospital.

“These were heavy caliber rounds. He is lucky he survived the incident,” a source told Vaalweekblad.

Apparently, this is the second attempt on Smit’s life.

Sedibeng Ster sent an inquiry to Capt. Teboho Lephoto, a police spokesperson. We are still waiting for feedback.
