"It is very important for Vaal to support and holistically help him develop."

SHARPEVILLE.- Sharpeville born, Orlando Pirates’ upcoming sensation, Relebohile Mofokeng, didn’t just make his parents proud; he also brought immense pride to the entire Sedibeng community when he stunned Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup final at the packed Mbombela Stadium on Saturday.

Mofokeng’s brilliance helped Orlando Pirates secure their second trophy of the season, scoring a decisive goal in the final stages of the game His parents, Sechaba and Naomi Mofokeng, were in the stands, witnessing their son outmanoeuvre the Sundowns defender before scoring what seemed an impossible goal.

The Mbombela Stadium erupted with excitement, especially from his parents.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, his father expressed their immense pride, particularly for Relebohile’s crucial goal that set the two teams apart. The excited father, who was also a well-known footballer in his day, attributed this success to hard work and dedication. Relebohile has been a consistent performer for Orlando Pirates throughout the season, whether starting the game or coming in as a substitute. His performance has earned him a place in the Bafana Bafana team set to face Nigeria and Zimbabwe in the World Cup Qualifier matches.

Bafana Bafana Coach Hugo Broos highly rates this Sharpeville-born star, believing he is destined for a great future.

“As Relebohile’s parents, we are very proud of our son, and we have been supporting him since he was young, playing on the dusty football grounds in Sharpeville. We will continue to support and guide him until he reaches his dreams. Watching him from the stands on Saturday was overwhelming, seeing him mesmerise his opponents. We also want to thank the people of Sedibeng for their encouraging messages, and we are grateful for their support,” said Mofokeng (father).

Sedibeng Ster Sport first spotted this talented youngster, still wet behind the ears, playing for the local amateur team Celeb Academy in Sharpeville. This was during the Community Games Tournament hosted by former Bafana Bafana midfielder, Augustine Makalakalane, at the George Thabe Stadium outside fields in Sharpeville. His team was crowned the U/13 champions after they defeated Nale Academy in the final.

Meanwhile, Makalakalane described Mofokeng as a sheer talent for all to see, praising his decision to play for a team like Orlando Pirates under the mentorship of Jose Riveiro, who understands how to balance young potential.

“It is very important for Vaal to support and holistically help him develop. The boy is one of the greatest talents to emerge in South African football to date, pure talent that needs proper guidance in education, finances, and other areas,” said Makalakalane.
