The Gauteng Provincial Government handed over 1 900 title deeds to residents of Impumelelo and Obed Mthombeni Nkosi in Lesedi Local Municipality on October 15.
The handover event was marked by jubilation as residents finally received formal recognition of their property rights after waiting for years.
Addressing the residents, Premier Panyaza Lesufi said, “This document brings dignity to you as you are part of our country’s economic activity. The title deed permits you to participate in the economy, and we, as the provincial government, want to congratulate you on your security of tenure. ”
MEC for Human Settlements, Tasneem Motara said the event is the first of many steps she will take to restore the dignity of South African homeowners and ensure that all citizens have access to the benefits of property ownership.
“The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements remains dedicated to transforming communities and enhancing the quality of life for all residents. This title deed handover is a testament to our commitment to building a brighter future for the people of Gauteng.”
One of the beneficiaries, Tinny Marumo, said she was happy to own a house finally.
“Today marks a new life for me and my children, as I received my title deed. This means I officially have a place to call home.
“I wish to thank the government for doing right by many of us. We applied for ours long ago and are title deed holders today. Hope this gesture won’t happen only to us, but to many other people who have registered for houses as far back as 1994.”
