Letter: Water leaks left unattended in Emfuleni
A lack of material - specifically clamps – is said to be the main reason why water leaks are often left unattended, according to Emfuleni Local Municipality insider, Elize Aucamp.
Elize Aucamp, councillor for Ward 45 of the Emfuleni Local Municipality, writes:
“While residents of Gauteng are warned that they will face ‘Day Zero’ soon and are asked to save water, water is running down the streets of the Emfuleni Local Municipality.
To make the situation worse, Emfuleni has a huge outstanding debt to Rand Water and this water running down the streets is adding to the bill, a bill which the Emfuleni Local Municipality is 100% solely responsible for, because they can’t bill anyone for it.
This is now called water down the drain.
The reason for failing to attend to the leaks is the lack of material, specifically clamps.
Councillors in Emfuleni have been bringing this to the attention of the Mayor, Sipho Radebe, the MMC for basic services, and Premier Panyaza Lesufi.
Unfortunately, there has been no intervention yet.”
