Emfuleni loses R100 million per month due to water leakages

A staggering 72% of purchased water is lost due to leakages and inefficiencies.

EMFULENI – The Democratic Alliance (DA) says it is concerned over the alarming revelation that Emfuleni Municipality loses a staggering 72% of its purchased water due to leakages and inefficiencies.

According to Cllr Dady Mollo, the DA’s Shadow MMC for Public Works, this equates to a financial loss of R1.2 billion annually, further intensifying the ongoing water crisis that residents are facing.

“While the municipality continues to incur these significant losses, many residents struggle to access clean water. The DA calls for immediate action to address this long-neglected issue.”

“The extent of this waste is unacceptable, especially given the daily challenges Emfuleni residents face in securing clean water,” says Mollo.

“The municipality’s inaction undermines the basic human right to water, with low-income communities bearing the brunt of this crisis,” he says.

R100 million in monthly financial losses

The DA demands the immediate prioritisation of water infrastructure upgrades and maintenance, transparent communication regarding measures to address the crisis and accountability for those responsible for the neglect and mismanagement.

“The DA will relentlessly advocate for urgent intervention and effective solutions to Emfuleni’s water crisis. Residents deserve better,” concludes Mollo.
