SEDIBENG.- It is that time of the year when local soccer fans will spend their festive holidays at the dusty soccer grounds to watch Kasi Football.

In fact, yours truly self-appointed Minister of Sports, Zakes’ Sports Corner, enjoys watching kasi football during the festive season. Kasi Football is popular in the community, especially with Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams on Christmas break. The Pooe Festive Soccer Tournament is the place to be for local soccer fans. This is one of the biggest tournaments in Gauteng. Since its inception, this tournament has attracted teams from as far as Free State, Soweto, and Limpopo.

This tournament plays an important role in the Evaton economy with locals selling food and refreshments for the better part of the December holidays. To make it interesting, the tournament sees some of the PSL players playing at this event, especially those who don’t get game time at their clubs.

The Vaal community loves this tournament and every day they pack the Pooe grounds to capacity to watch their favourite make-shift teams. This is the only platform where players are allowed to express their God-given talent, kneeing on the ball, no-look pass, shibobo, show me your number. This is the kind of football the soccer fans enjoy, unlike ‘skop and jaag‘ kind of football.

This is the tournament where many youngsters make a name for themselves playing in front of a large number of supporters every day. They spend the entire festive season here watching diski nine. Zakes’ Sports Corner will be there bringing all action on camera.

It is a relaxing atmosphere with the soccer fans putting their camping chairs inside the field at the end of the games to continue enjoying themselves. The passion of local football fans is something unique. In fact, at this time of the year, fans eat, drink, and sleep football.
