Golden era of drive-in theatres at River Square revived

River Square recently brought back the drive-in theatre.

VEREENIGING – There was a nostalgic atmosphere in the air on November 8 as the River Square shopping centre relived the golden age of drive-in theatres.

The shopping centre’s parking area was transformed into a drive-in theatre.

Nearly 100 vehicles rolled in to enjoy a screening of Minions 2025 on a massive outdoor screen, with moviegoers of all ages coming together for a night of family-friendly fun.

The event was a hit for young and old.

Some moviegoers even brought their four-legged friends along to enjoy the experience.

While some viewers preferred to watch the movie in the comfort of their cars, others got creative and sat in the trunks of their vehicles.

Some of the moviegoers even watched the movie from the roofs of their cars.

The movie’s soundtrack was synchronized via a local FM station, 102FM, which ensured that everyone had the perfect audio experience.

As part of the drive-in experience, visitors enjoyed a variety of snacks, including the classic popcorn, which added to the atmosphere of a true outdoor cinema.

The event allowed guests to relive the memory of drive-in theatres, which were most popular in the 1950s, before their decline in the late 20th century due to the rise of multiplex cinemas and home videos.

Brandan Erxleben, the marketing manager for River Square, told Vaalweekblad that they hope to make it a regular feature.

The event was a wonderful way to bring people together in a fun and unique environment.

The success of the event also showed that, despite the decline of drive-in theatres, there is still an audience eager for this nostalgic experience.

River Square’s Drive-In Cinema will become a new tradition for the local community, combining old-school charm with modern convenience.
