My soul says Ezimnyama Ngenkani… and my heart says Phefeni Glamour Boys!

Apart from growing up in the football community, I grew up in a family that supported one of these two teams.

SEDIBENG.- My soul says Orlando Pirates will claim the weekend derby’s bragging rights, but my heart says Kaizer Chiefs!

Zakes’ Sports Corner joins the millions of South Africans to reflect on this derby – one of the biggest in the world – but has mixed feelings over this coming Saturday. There is a lot of talk all over street corners, taverns, shebeens, clubs, taxis, buses, and even workplaces about this much-anticipated derby. The Calabash vessel-shaped FNB Stadium is the venue for the big clash.

Apart from growing up in the football community, I grew up in a family that supported one of these two teams.

The truth is that, at one stage of my life, my blood was black and gold. But having said this, Zakes’ Sports Corner’s loyalty has since been divided in this derby. My heart says Ezimnyama Ngenkani Zaghebhula mhlaba ka Masepala, but my soul says Phefeni Glamour Boys.

Looking at the stats Pirates are the hot favourites coming into this encounter, because of their form…But whenever these two teams meet in the cup or league matches, form doesn’t matter.

Two of our local boys, Relebohile Mofokeng and Naledi Hlongwane, might find themselves playing against each other. Mofokeng is on top of his career while Hlongwane has just been promoted to the senior team following his outstanding performance in the Carling Black Label’s All-Star Team at the end of last year.

His name is on everyone’s lips following his brace which earned him a Man of the Match award.

This derby has everything to do with the Vaal, as everyone will be looking to see these two talented youngsters play against each other. This will be the first time in the history of South African football.

Like previous derbies, the Post Office in Zone 11 in Sebokeng will be the meeting point for local soccer fans to paint the venue black and white and black and gold!
