Gone are the days of local institutions’ derby
At one stage NWU Vaal FC campaigned in the ABC Motsepe League before it was relegated to the third division league.
SEDIBENG.- Gone are the days of the Hollywood Men Regional League derby between NWU Vaal FC and VUT FC.
The NWU Vaal FC has been relegated to the lower division after finishing at the bottom of the log last season. This is a massive blow for the institution after so many years of campaigning in the SAFA Sedibeng Senior Men Regional League. This means there will no longer be exciting derbies between these two soccer teams this season.
The two institutions used to make the SAFA Sedibeng Men Regional League exciting whenever they met in a league match. One of the memorable games was when NWU Vaal FC beat VUT FC 5-1 at Isak Steyl Stadium.
At one stage NWU Vaal FC campaigned in the ABC Motsepe League before it was relegated to the third division league, the Regional Men League in the 2022/2023 season. However, there is an attempt to bring the club back into the SAFA Sedibeng Hollywood Regional League.
NWU Vaal FC is now campaigning in the Emfuleni Local Football Association’s Super League in the Vanderbijlpark and Evaton Stream to return their status in the SAFA Sedibeng Regional League.
This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport by Joseph ‘Mentor’ Matlhonong who is in charge of the NWU Vaal FC. The other team that plays in the Evaton Stream is the NWU Eagles FC.
“Unfortunately, we were relegated to the lower division but I have confidence that we will reclaim our status in the regional league. We divided the teams into two with one playing in the Evaton Stream and the other in the Vanderbijlpark Stream. We are currently topping the Vanderbijlpark Stream and the aim is to maintain this performance and win promotion at the end of the season. As things stand, we are in control and we will take each and every game as it comes. We all know that NWU Vaal FC deserves to play in the Regional League or ABC Motsepe League. We proved in the past that we belong to these above leagues,” said Matlhonong.
At one stage, there were two teams from Sedibeng campaigning in the ABC Motsepe League and Vaal Professional FC was one of them. It was always an exciting derby between the Vaal Professional FC and NWU Vaal FC.
