Suspect to appear in court after racial slurs on social media

As the investigation unfolds more charges could be added.

CAPE TOWN – In response to a video circulated on social media platforms recently where a 50-year-old man rants about what he perceives as the appalling situation in South Africa, the Western Cape Commercial Crimes Unit initiated an investigation after a complaint was laid.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa, the suspect was arrested in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday and will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court today on charges of crimen injuria and contravention of aspects of the Cyber Act.

In the video, the man makes derogatory remarks about a specific racial group that in his view is purportedly intent on harming white people.

The remarks in the video explicitly detail the type of harm that white people are set to suffer at the hands of black people. He calls on white people to wake up from their slumber. Reference is also made to two politicians in the video in an insulting manner.

As the investigation unfolds more charges could be added.
