Crackdown on illegal mining in the Vaal
Mukwevho highlighted the importance of various stakeholders, including members of the community collaborating with the police in the fight against crime.
MIDVAAL – The Sedibeng District Commissioner Major General Nkhensani Mukwevho recently led the destruction of confiscated Phenduka (processing equipment) at De Ouderwerf in Meyerton.
Various stakeholders joined Mukwevho during the event on February 28.
In her keynote address, Mukwevho said the destruction of Phenduka signifies a firm stand against illegal mining in the Sedibeng District.
“We will not tolerate illegal mining. We have illegal mining activities in Heidelberg and surface mining which normally happens in Meyerton, De Deur, and Walkerville plots. The illicit miners collect what they get from other places and process it using spaces within the district.”
Mukwevho urged members of the community who know about such processing places to join in the fight by giving information to the police.
She reiterated that the consequences of illegal mining are not just economical, but sometimes result in a loss of life.
“All life is important; we are obligated to protect all citizens of the country. Today we are sending out a strong message, those that are harbouring illegal miners will be arrested for being accomplices.”
Mukwevho highlighted the importance of various stakeholders, including members of the community collaborating with the police in the fight against crime.
Midvaal Local Municipality MMC for Public Safety and RoadsChantal Gomes congratulated the police on an excellent job.
“I have lived on the plots for many years, I live in De Deur where there are issues surrounding illegal mining. It is heartwarming to see that the police are doing such a great job. I commend you for the great job you have done here and I am proud to support you in all your endeavours.”
