SANEF deeply saddened by passing of Photojournalist
Daily Sun photographer/journalist Tumelo Mofokeng was laid to his final destination on Saturday in Vaal.
EVATON.- Daily Sun award-winning photographer/journalist Tumelo Mofokeng (39) was laid to rest at Jacobs Kop Cemetery in Vereeniging on Saturday.
His moving funeral service was held at the packed Mafatsane Community Hall in Evaton.

Mofokeng was admitted to Sebokeng Hospital on February 27 but he unfortunately passed away on March 1 following a short illness. He left behind his wife Lindela and two young children. The Mafatsane Community Hall was packed to capacity with friends, relatives, colleagues from the media, political leaders, and community members who came to pay their last respects.
His colleagues at Daily Sun described him as hard-working and someone who always brought the best stories for the publication. Mofokeng was not just a journalist but also very involved in the community helping those from the poorest of poor communities.
Speaker after speaker told the mourners that Mofokeng was selfless and always put others first.

He was described as a respected journalist who was a dedicated and passionate storyteller who served his community with integrity.
Apart from working for Daily Sun, Mofokeng contributed to the Sowetan, Theta FM, and also founded his own publication The Weekly Post among other publications.
The South African National Editor’s Forum (SANEF) said they are deeply saddened by his passing.
“As SANEF we extended our heartfelt condolences to his and children as well as his colleagues, friends, and the brother media community. Mofokeng loved storytelling through the lens, his untimely passing is a great loss to the journalism fraternity. His contribution to the media and his passion for storytelling will not be forgotten. SANEF honours his legacy and commitment to truth and courage. May his soul rest in peace.”
Mofokeng’s passion for reporting earned him widespread recognition, including a 2023/24 Police Excellence Award. Speaking during Mofokeng’s funeral service, Theta FM presenter, Kent Sethabela said Mofokeng had a distinct work ethic.
“Tumelo’s journalistic instinct was unmatched. He would start his day in the early hours of the morning just to ensure that he got the scoop. Tumelo would call me every morning and we would plan our diary. He lived to serve the community. Most of all he loved his family,” he concluded.
