Former Banyana star wins Sasol Marathon
Ironically, she has been forgotten, especially when mentioning former Banyana Banyana players.
BOIPATONG.- Former Banyana Banyana defender Rose ‘Pona’ Jijane (43) was once again in the headlines.
This former Bophelong and Ladies FC defender-turned-runner won the 30th Sasol Marathon held at DP Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg on Saturday. She was competing in the 42km in the women’s section, finishing time 03:13:46.
When she retired, Jijanes shocked many when she decided to join the local athletic club.

She proved many wrong.
Despite her age, Jijane’s level of fitness is something to inspire many athletes. Her lifestyle is something that inspires former sportsmen and women, that it is never too late. However, when she retired from football, little did she know that one day she would be a household name in athletics.

She told Sedibeng Ster Sport that she never anticipated being the runner that she is today, winning some high-profile athletics events. Sedibeng Ster Sport has been following her career since her days as a footballer. Ironically, she has been forgotten, especially when mentioning former Banyana Banyana players.
She looks young and strong.
Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport after the race on Saturday, Jijane said she came into this marathon well prepared. Sedibeng Ster Sport witnessed her commitment before the marathon, running in the Vanderbijlpark streets in the morning and afternoon.
“I’m happy that I made the right decision when I joined athletics. It was easy for me to adapt because I was a soccer player, and this helped me adjust a lot. Running was the best decision I made, and as they say, the rest is history. I want to thank my coach, Toma Tsotetsi, for pushing me hard at training. As a former runner, his experience helped me a lot to win these races.”
