Child Welfare SA’s office in Vanderbijlpark temporarily closes
The welfare office in Vanderbijlpark has been forced to close its doors amid the nationwide funding crisis by the Department of Social Development.
VANDERBIJLPARK – Child Welfare South Africa (CWSA)’s local branch was forced to close on May 5 after the Department of Social Development allegedly failed to pay the organisation.
The incident highlights the broader funding crisis at welfare organisations nationwide.
In a letter sent out, CWSA’s office manager, Magda de Man, expressed her displeasure with the situation.
She said that social workers can no longer afford transport and are struggling to meet their financial obligations, including medical care for their children.
“Our staff are dedicated to service, but they simply can no longer bear the costs without support from the state.”

She highlighted the important role of the office in the community and warned of the negative impact of the closure on both vulnerable children and professional social workers.
This incident is part of a national pattern of payment delays and administrative failures by the state department.
In Gauteng alone, several non-profit organisations reported working without payment for months, despite signing service-level agreements.
Administrative errors, such as lost documents, were often cited as reasons for non-payment.
Service delivery to communities began to suffer severely, with essential services such as substance abuse treatment programmes being particularly hard hit.
The funding crisis has forced several child and youth care centres to reduce their services or close permanently.
Child Welfare South Africa plays a key role in protecting children’s rights.
The organisation offers services such as foster care and adoption.
The closure of the Vanderbijlpark office means that these services in the community are suspended, exposing children to greater risks of abuse and neglect.
The ongoing funding crisis highlights the urgent need for sustainable, reliable government support to ensure the continued existence of critical welfare services in South Africa.
