Meyerton shooting: ‘If the bullet had hit him differently, he could have died’

Father grateful after son sustains minor injury following shooting incident.

MEYERTON – “We are shocked. If he had just been hit differently, he would have died. We just thank God.”

This is what Kobus Greyling, the father of the Hoërskool Dr. Malan learner who was hit by a stray bullet on the morning of May 20, told Vaalweekblad.

A projectile picked up at Hoërskool Dr. Malan was handed over to the police.

It is believed that Adriaan (15) was on the second floor of the school when the stray bullet first hit a cement slab and then hit him in the knee.

An initial police statement declared that reports of a learner having been shot were false, “since the police went to the school and confirmed that no learner was injured during the shooting.”

When Vaalweekblad enquired about the police statement, Greyling said the projectile that was picked up at the school was handed over to the police.

“The police took a statement from Adriaan,” Greyling added.

“The wound also matches the shape of the projectile,” Greyling pointed out to Vaalweekblad.

Adriaan was taken to the hospital for observation. He sustained a minor wound with no broken bones.

When asked how Adriaan was doing, Kobus said, “He is 100%. He is a strong boy.”

Adriaan is a member of the U16 rugby team of Hoërskool Dr. Malan.
