SHARPEVILLE.- Vaal Stars Basketball Club will host Sisters in Sport, United in Strength Basketball Tournament at Tshepiso Sports Centre on Women’s Day.
Pinky Machobane, who is behind this initiative, said this tournament will be in honour of one of their superstars, Sthando Gaula, who is doing exceptionally well for her team, Tshwane Suns, in the professional Basketball League.
According to Machobane, this tournament will also be dedicated to her as part of Women’s Day celebrations.

Gaula is one of the best basketball players to have come from Sedibeng, formerly with the VUT Basketball Club. Machobane said Gaula and other women in sport need to be honoured while still active in sport.
She confirmed with Sedibeng Ster Sport that this Women’s Day Tournament will be the first of its kind to honour those women who have put Sedibeng on the map.
To make this tournament a success, Machobane said women’s basketball teams are welcome to be part of this initiative.
“As the Vaal Basketball Club, we want to extend our invitation to all the women’s basketball teams out there to join us on this day. This day belongs to all women in South Africa as a celebration of each other in the sports field. Hence the name of the tournament: Sisters in Sport, United in Strength. We want to bring all women together and unite them in one voice. This is our time to appreciate each other as women, not to outshine one another. It is not about who is going to win but embracing each other in the name of sport,” said Machobane.
