SHARPEVILLE.- Vaal Stars Basketball Club hosted a Women’s Day Basketball Tournament in honour of women in sport at Tshepiso Sports Complex on August 9.
The main purpose of this women’s basketball tournament was to celebrate those women, young and old, in sports. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster Sport, Pinky Machobane, who was behind this initiative, hailed this tournament as a great success.
She told Sedibeng Ster Sport that she was overwhelmed by the positive response from the local basketball teams and community members. She also revealed to Sedibeng Ster Sport that the tournament will be held annually because of the demand from participating teams. Machobane said the response was positive, with members of the community joining them in celebrating this historical day on the calendar.

However, she was quick to point out that it was never about winning but about bringing women together to appreciate each other. The club also took this opportunity to honour one of their superstars, Sthando Gaula, who plays for Tshwane Sun. Gaula is one of the best basketball players from the Vaal, formerly with VUT. She graced the event together with her family to witness this special recognition. It was a great day for basketball with young and old competing to celebrate this Women’s Day.
“I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who made this tournament what it turned out to be, especially those teams that accepted our invitation to celebrate this day together. I must say, as the Vaal Basketball Club, we are honoured to receive such support from the community. We also want to thank Sthando for honouring our invitation and spending the day with us.”

“Her presence was more than enough to motivate some of these young basketball players who also dream of becoming professional basketball players. We want to see more young girls participating in basketball within our community, and as Vaal Stars Basketball Club, we will ensure that we recruit more talent,” she concluded.
