NWU Vaal back in the Men’ Regional League

NWU Vaal FC was relegated to the lower division two seasons ago after finishing in an unfamiliar position in the league.

VANDERBIJLPARK.- NWU Vaal FC is back in the SAFA Sedibeng Hollywood Men’s Regional League. This, after they were crowned the winners at the SAFA Sedibeng Regional play-offs held at NWU Vaal soccer grounds over the weekend.

The play-offs saw the six teams from the three local football associations – Emfuleni Local Football Association, Lesedi Local Football Association, and Midvaal Local Football Association – competing against each other for promotion to the SAFA Sedibeng Men’s Regional League, formerly the SAB Regional League.

The play-offs were divided into two streams, with NWU Vaal and Early Birds FC from Midvaal finishing at the top of their streams, respectively, to earn promotion to the regional league. This means the two teams will form part of the 16 teams competing in the regional league for the 2025/2026 season.

To date, NWU Vaal FC was relegated to the lower division two seasons ago after finishing in an unfamiliar position in the league. This was despite the resources the institution has, including the playing facilities. It was sad to see the team being relegated to the lower division. However, the change of management saw the resurrection of this sleeping giant. It is a work in progress to revive all the institution’s football structures.

Sedibeng Ster Sport has been reliably informed that former SAFA Sedibeng Regional Technical Officer, Thulani Mthikhulu, has been appointed to oversee the NWU Vaal football structures.

SAFA Sedibeng deputy president Velaphi Motsepe, who watched the play-offs from the stands, was quick to congratulate the two teams for being promoted to the big boys’ league. “We welcome the two teams in our regional men’s league and wish them all the best in the new season,” he said.
