SEDIBENG.- With the DSTV Diski Challenge (DDC) kick-off this weekend, the sad news for local soccer fans is that only Sekhukhune United will host their home games at Isak Steyl Stadium this season.

Last year, both United and Orlando Pirates used the Isak Steyl Stadium for their DDC home games. Pirates, however, have since moved their home base to the UJ Soweto Campus.

Pirates DDC coach Joseph Makhanya confirmed the switch:

“We’re really going to miss playing in Vaal because we had wonderful support from everyone here. We all know that you cannot talk about South African football without mentioning the Vaal. This region has produced incredible players, many of whom I played with and against at Pirates.”

Ironically, Pirates still featured in a pre-season friendly in the Vaal, despite not scheduling their league fixtures there.

United will open their campaign against Golden Arrows at Isak Steyl Stadium on September 20. This encounter promises fireworks as both teams are eager to challenge for the DDC title. Kaizer Chiefs’ babies are the defending champions, and all eyes will be on whether they can hold onto their crown.
