SEDIBENG.- Can somebody tell me, Zakes’ Sports Corner, what is the interesting story about Sicelo Stadium in Midvaal?
It seems everyone is taking their games to this venue.
First it was Young Pirates FC, then Remember Elite Sport Academy (RESA), and now Jomo Cosmos.
Zakes’ Sports Corner has learned that Jomo Cosmo also plays their ABC Motsepe League matches at Sicelo Stadium. This means that both Young Pirates FC and Jomo Cosmos use the venue for their home games. So, what is so special about the venue? Truth be told, Zakes’ Sports Corner has been there, and I must say, it’s a top-class facility, especially the pitch.
The venue is far better compared to other soccer fields in Sedibeng, hence everyone runs to this venue.
Not long ago, Zakes’ Sports Corner wrote a letter to the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Mayor Sipho Radebe regarding the poor state of sports facilities in Emfuleni.
This was after yours truly, “self-appointed minister of sport,” learned that everyone is taking their important games to Midvaal because of the lack of maintenance back home. Let’s be clear, Zakes’ Sport Corner doesn’t say it is wrong to take games to Sicelo Stadium.
My concern is the declining condition of facilities under the Emfuleni Local Municipality.
RESA also uses Sicelo Stadium when hosting high-profile events or games such as the Gauteng Development League Festival Games.
Meanwhile, George Thabe Stadium in Emfuleni is only hosting SAFA Sedibeng Hollywood League matches.
For example, Jomo Cosmos took their game at Isak Steyl Stadium, which is a privately owned facility, for their league game against Young Pirates FC. One would expect them to take the game closer to the community, perhaps George Thabe Stadium, but this hasn’t been the case.
This tells you about the state of facilities under the “troublesome” ELM.
Zakes’ Sports Corner wants to take this opportunity to compliment Midvaal Local Municipality for a job well done on transforming Sicelo Stadium into a top-class facility.
Zakes’ Sport Corner doesn’t blame any team for choosing to play there.
