Families living with disabilities celebrated
“My parents never allowed their inability to stop them from living. They raised us with love, confidence, and joy as they continued to live their lives to the fullest."
VEREENIGING.- Unity and empowerment were the order of the day when two powerful and selfless individuals hosted a Families Living with Disabilities event at Riviera on Vaal on Saturday.
Naura Modungwa and Mosele Maloka were the individuals behind this first-of-its-kind initiative in Sedibeng.
The main aim was to celebrate families living with or raising children with disabilities, fostering understanding, acceptance, and emotional support within the community. Families from across Sedibeng came in numbers, gathered to share their stories, celebrate resilience, and find encouragement among others walking similar journeys.

The families shared heartwarming stories and experienced what it is like to raise someone with a disability.

Modungwa shared her touching story about her son, who lives with cerebral palsy and epilepsy but dreams of becoming a police officer, a symbol of his strength and desire to serve others despite his challenges. Modungwa also shared that her faith and community support have carried her through challenges, and shared how her son continues to inspire her daily with his courage and determination.

“My son, Tshogofatso, has taught me patience, faith, and unconditional love. He reminds me daily that every child has a purpose,” she said.

His touching story set the tone for a day filled with compassion, awareness, and hope. Some of the familiar faces at the occasion were radio personality George Lephoto, who reminded those in attendance that each family’s journey is guided by grace and purpose. Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Maloka said she was deeply touched by the shared stories.
Maloka, who is also a Life Coach and counsellor, also shared her story of growing up as a daughter of deaf parents.
“My parents never allowed their inability to stop them from living. They raised us with love, confidence, and joy as they continued to live their lives to the fullest,” said Maloka.
Other organisations present on the day included Itumeleng Wellness Solutions and Inspiration Through Inclusion.
