DA takes sewer battle to Human Rights Commission as Boipatong suffers

Boipatong residents say they’re “living in filth” as raw sewage continues to flow through streets and into homes.

VANDERBIJLPARK – The Democratic Alliance (DA) conducted an oversight in Boipatong, Winnies Park Ext 3, where residents continue to complain about raw sewage flowing in the streets and trickling into their homes.

This has apparently been an ongoing concern for years. Reports have been made to the municipality, but no permanent solution has been implemented.

“The DA in Emfuleni has launched a petition to submit and exert pressure on the Human Rights Commission and will continue to fight for the dignity of the residents of Emfuleni,” says cllr Ntombi Hlophe.

“Emfuleni Local Municipality, through its entity Metsi a Lekoa and multiple contractors, has failed to fix these raw sewer problems that have plagued the community of Boipatong for years.

“The DA has formally reported this multiple times to the municipality with no luck. This is one of the main areas in Emfuleni that motivated the DA in Emfuleni to lodge a complaint with the Human Rights Commission”.

“A contractor has been appointed to deal with this issue and is on site every day, but no real improvement has been made. Residents continue to walk and jump over raw sewage to get to the other side of streets like Sekati and Selemfe Streets.

“The DA will continuously follow up with the responsible departments to deal with this sewer crisis, as this is also a persistent problem near a school. Pupils of Lebohang High School are exposed to this and continuously fall ill due to the raw sewage they are subjected to,” she concludes.
