Counterfeit goods worth over R1m seized during raids
Counterfeit goods worth more than R1m were seized during a series of joint operations conducted across Gauteng in the first week of 2026, as police intensified efforts to clamp down on illegal trade.
GAUTENG. – A joint operation by the Gauteng Counterfeit Unit and brand protectors led to the seizure of counterfeit goods valued at more than R1m during the first week of 2026.
The operation kicked off on January 5, when the team clamped down on various shops in Vanderbijlpark. During the raids, counterfeit consumables, clothing, and accessories with an estimated value of R322 680 were seized.
On January 6, the operation moved to Pretoria Central in the Tshwane District, where several shops dealing in cellphone accessories were searched. Counterfeit cellphone accessories worth approximately R518 000 were seized.
Following further intelligence received, the team proceeded to Lenasia in the Johannesburg District on January 7, and later to Fochville in the West Rand District on January 8. Searches conducted at shops in these areas led to the recovery of counterfeit consumables, clothing, and accessories valued at R394 780.
Police said the operations form part of ongoing efforts to combat the manufacturing, possession, and trading of counterfeit goods across the province. Gauteng police have reiterated that they will continue to act decisively against individuals and businesses involved in the illegal counterfeit trade.
SAPS has continuously highlighted that counterfeit and illicit goods pose serious risks to consumers, legitimate businesses, and the economy.
“These products are often manufactured and distributed outside regulated systems, with no regard for quality standards, safety, or lawful trade practices. Moreover, legitimate manufacturers and retailers lose market share to illegal traders, leading to reduced production and unemployment.”
