Meyerton SAPS probe fake police recruitment scam

Police spokesperson Constable Nompumelelo Zazini has warned the community against a fake job advertisement, adding that no recruitment drive is currently underway at the Meyerton Police Station.

MEYERTON – The Meyerton South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a warning to residents after a message circulating on WhatsApp claimed that the local police station was recruiting new members.

The message sated that five applicants were being sought from Ward 3, with requirements including a Grade 12 qualification and an age range of 18 to 35. The message further encouraged interested individuals to contact a “Captain Dlamini” on a provided cellphone number.

However, Constable Zazini Nompumelelo, spokesperson for the Meyerton police, later issued a follow-up message distancing the police from the recruitment notice, describing it as fake news.

“Attention all media houses, the above message is fake news. Meyerton SAPS did not publish any vacant posts and there is no Captain Dlamini in Meyerton SAPS. The community must be alert to not get scammed,” she said.

Zazini confirmed that no recruitment drive is currently underway at the Meyerton Police Station and urged residents not to respond to or share the misleading message.

She further advised members of the public to verify any police-related announcements through official SAPS channels and to report suspicious messages to the authorities.

SAPS has repeatedly warned that fraudulent recruitment scams often target unemployed youth, using false promises of employment to extract money or personal information.
