Two more learners die following Monday’s crash

The 22-year-old driver is currently facing 14 counts of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.

VANDERBIJPARK.- Two more learners from the accident that took place on Monday morning between a school taxi and a tipper lorry died in hospital in the early hours of this morning.

The minibus was transporting children to various schools, including El-Shaddai Christian School, Oliver Lodge Primary School, Vaal Triangle Primary School, Vaal High School and Suncrest High School.

On Wednesday, the Gauteng Department of Health confirmed that 12 learners died in the crash, seven survivors were transported by Gauteng EMS to Sebokeng and Kopanong hospitals. At Sebokeng Hospital, four learners and the minibus taxi driver were admitted. Three learners remained in the Intensive Care Unit; with one in a critical, unstable condition while two remained in a critical but stable condition.

The 22-year-old driver is currently facing 14 counts of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.

He is expected to appear before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court this morning.
