ANC swaps Sedibeng councillors ahead of no-confidence vote
The shuffle comes just before a high-stakes vote that could unseat the mayor.
VEREENIGING – The African National Congress (ANC) has replaced four councillors on the Sedibeng District Council ahead of a motion of no confidence against Executive Mayor Cllr Lerato Maloka.
The motion, formally submitted by the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) on 21 January, was received by the Office of the Municipal Manager and directed to the Speaker of Council under the municipality’s Standing Rules and Orders.
Council documents show that councillors M A Dondolo, G R Tladi, T M Khoza and Y Moti were withdrawn and replaced by N S Phala, M Sikukula, M H Time and S C Zitha from Emfuleni Local Municipality.
The changes were approved by Emfuleni Local Council on 29 January and noted by the Sedibeng Speaker.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) alleged the timing was politically motivated. “The ANC in Sedibeng is swapping out four of its members — not to strengthen capacity, but to protect their mayor in the upcoming vote of no confidence,” the party said.
The latest motion follows a previous attempt to remove Maloka, reported last week. The ANC had not responded to requests for comment by publication.
