SEDIBENG.- Excitement is building ahead of the massive Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. The match is set to be a special occasion for the Vaal region, with at least six local youngsters hoping to feature in this historic clash.

The two Soweto giants will renew their bitter rivalry in the Betway Premiership League at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on February 28. Kick-off time is at 15:00.

It is a rare moment in South African football history to see so many players from the Vaal forming part of the squads, particularly for Orlando Pirates.

The six players who could take to the field are:

Tshepang Moremi, Relebohile Mofokeng, Boitumelo Radiopana, Thabiso Lebitso, Mpho Chabatsane (Orlando Pirates and Naledi Hlongwane (Kaizer Chiefs).

Fans from Sharpeville are expected to travel in large numbers to support their local heroes, Moremi and Mofokeng. Both players are expected to be in the starting line-up, given their excellent recent form for both Orlando Pirates and the national team, Bafana Bafana.

On the other hand, Hlongwane is the only player from Vaal playing for Kaizer Chiefs. He has been in top form for the Chiefs’ DStv Diski Challenge team.

Going into the match, Orlando Pirates are seen as the favourites. They have been in strong form recently, while Kaizer Chiefs have been inconsistent, blowing hot and cold this season. However, as football fans know well, when it comes to the derby, current form counts for nothing. On the day, it is all about pride.
