IN Pictures: Residents close off Waterdal Road demanding electricity

SEDIBENG. – Traffic jammed two entrances of Sebokeng this morning after the residents of Extension 30 closed off Waterdal Road near Boiketlong demanding electricity.

Frustration set in on the motorists as they woke up to the closure of the road that links Sebokeng to the town of Vereeniging, they had to use Moshoeshoe Road (Hospital Road) as debris and burning tyres filled the Waterdal Road.

The not so long refurbished Waterdal Road is used by taxis, cars and busses that form the high volume of the traffic transporting workers and pupils to their different destinations. The residents said that since moving into the area in 2022, the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) has been ‘dilly-dallying’ in providing them with the basic commodity, electricity.

“We are sick and tired of their empty promises that they have been making to us. We have closed this road because we know that it is the busiest. Closing it will open their eyes to our concerns. We want electricity now, we are not moving from this road,” said Nthabiseng Mthimkulu, a resident.

A letter from the ELM, seen by Sedibeng Ster, said that a new tender for consultants has been advertised and is awaiting evaluation.

“The aim is to review the designs and recommend what should be done. The appointment of a panel of contractors for construction purposes was sent to the evaluation committee in January 2026. The sooner the report to BAC is done then we can advertise for pricing on construction,” the ELM said.

When Sedibeng Ster visited the scene the residents vowed that the road would not be opened until something “concrete” is tabled to them.
