Author urges children to speak out against bullying

Drawing from his own experiences as a victim of workplace bullying, Makhado hopes the story will help both children and adults understand how to confront and overcome toxic behaviour.

WALKERVILLE – Seasoned author Justice Makhado has, in his latest edition dubbed The Walkerville Bullies – A Tale with Teeth! shared insights on how bullying can be eradicated.
Having previously been a victim of bullying in the workplace, Makhado says he found it important to share important information on how everyday people can overcome this social ill.

Co-authored by Tholakele Zulu, the book uses meerkats to explore bullying, power struggles, and toxic environments that mirror those found in schools and workplaces. In a candid interview with Ster North, Makhado said that bullying happens everywhere, including workplaces and schools. He said that the book offers important tools for both adults and children to navigate through this ordeal.

“Whether you’re a student trying to find your voice, a parent seeking to guide your child, or a leader hoping to build a healthier culture, this book is for you. Because bullying doesn’t just live in schools, it lives in boardrooms, classrooms, and communities. And it’s time we faced it together.”

He said the idea to write the book stemmed from his own experiences, and because his own children had gone through the same thing at their schools.

“I urge kids who are being bullied not to fight back but rather speak out. Some kids become vulnerable and would not want to fight back. I urge these kids to tell someone that they are being bullied.”

Speaking to pupils at New Hope High School recently, Makhado urged kids not to stand by and capture content while other kids are being bullied. He said that they must reprimand the bully and tell someone.

Makhado says the book addresses children, parents, teachers, and professionals. The book utilises relatable animal characters to make complex topics more approachable and offer simple, actionable lessons on speaking up and seeking help.
