DA calls for immediate impounding of ‘Amapanyaza’ vehicles

“Premier Lesufi should hang his head in shame. Under his watch, the Amapanyaza are operating with impunity, defying laws with no visible consequences, and putting lives at risk."

SEDIBENG. – The DA is demanding that 24 Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens (Amapanyaza) vehicles be taken off the road immediately because they are operating with expired licence discs.

The party is also calling for decisive action against officials who failed to keep the fleet roadworthy and legal.

This demand follows a recent tragic incident in Evaton West, where a four-year-old girl was hit by an Amapanyaza vehicle operating with an expired license disc

Sedibeng Ster reported about this incident recently.

It has now been revealed that two dozen vehicles in the warden’s fleet are also driving without valid discs, putting residents’ lives at risk.

This shocking information was revealed by Premier Panyaza Lesufi in a reply to questions from the DA in the Provincial Legislature.

According to the premier, the Department of Community Safety is aware that some Amapanyaza vehicles are in use with expired license discs dating back to August 2024. While renewals have been paid for, the discs are being withheld because the vehicles lack valid roadworthy certificates.

Lesufi further admitted that no one has been held accountable for this administrative lapse, caused by the negligence of officials within his department.

The DA criticised the premier for praising the wardens during his State of the Province Address while ignoring serious concerns about their conduct.

“Premier Lesufi should hang his head in shame. Under his watch, the Amapanyaza are operating with impunity, defying laws with no visible consequences, and putting lives at risk. Yet ordinary Gauteng residents face fines and penalties for violating road rules. This double standard erodes public trust, undermines the rule of law, and sends a dangerous message that accountability applies only to citizens.”
