Family mourns Evaton murder victim after police identity error
SAPS has since apologised publicly for their mistake, confirming that he was a South African citizen.
EVATON.- Arlindo Ronald Le-Batie Lindo (33) was a proud South African, born and raised in Eldorado Park.
His mother, Agroticia Jones, remembers him as a private, resilient and independent man who, after his time in Extension 3 of the Soweto suburb, made Evaton his home for the past eight years. He was an entrepreneur who sold perfume and accessories.
“He did not have many friends…”
“He was also known as a motivator, inspiring others even while keeping much of his life private. He may not have had many friends, but those who knew him understood his depth, resilience, and independence,” she said
Jones made these statements in fond memory of her son, who was the unnamed subject of a press release issued by the South African Police Service on 22 May. Following the discovery of his body in the Evaton Cemetery, the press release incorrectly described him as an Ethiopian National. Police indicated that he was not known to anyone in the local neighbourhood.
Sedibeng Ster published the contents thereof under the headline, “Man’s body found at Evaton Cemetery” , (link below).

In it, police spokesperson, Sergeant Thulisile Msibi, indicated that the (then unidentified) victim had suffered multiple injuries before he died, indicating that he was moved to the cemetery after being killed. He was wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

According to his family, Arlindo had been reported missing at the Evaton Police Station on May 15, and they still experience deep sorrow after identifying him as the murder victim.

SAPS has since apologised publicly for their mistake, confirming that he was a South African citizen.
Msibi apologised for the misinformation and any misunderstanding caused, reaffirming Evaton SAPS’ commitment to accurate communication.
“We appreciate the understanding and co-operation of all stakeholders,” Msibi said.
“I ask that you kindly correct the record to reflect his true identity and the life he lived,” his mother requested in her letter to Sedibeng Ster.
In so doing, she clarified that he was, in fact, deeply loved, that he made a difference, and that he will be sorely missed.
Arlindo is survived by his parents, two brothers, and a sister.
He will be buried this weekend in Eldorado Park, Extension 3.
