Boiketlong community promotes fitness and wellness
“A healthy and united community is a stronger community."
SEBOKENG.– More and more community members are becoming wiser when it comes to taking care of their health.
This was proven when the Sebokeng SAPS, together with various stakeholders, participated in a community fitness initiative in White City Ext 3, Boiketlong, this week.

Police spokesperson, Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane, said that the initiative brought together representatives from the SAPS, Department of Health, Department of Sport, MASP, Ahanang Parish Based Care Organisation, as well as community members.

The event focused on promoting physical wellness and highlighted the important role of the elderly and youth within the community. Mokhachane said it was spearheaded by Bridgette Ngobeni, who explained that the objective was to encourage community members from all walks of life to participate in regular physical activities.

“Regular exercise can contribute to improved physical health and assist in addressing obesity-related health challenges,” explained Mkhachane.
Representing the Department of Sport, Ntsoaki Mokhethi provided information on the benefits of aerobic exercise.
Mokhethi explained that aerobic activities involve large muscle groups through rhythmic and repetitive movements, which increase the heart rate and the body’s use of oxygen.

“Activities such as walking, cycling and swimming can contribute to overall health and may help reduce the risk of conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.”
The programme commenced with a warm-up session, followed by an energetic aerobics session. Community members participated enthusiastically alongside their families, neighbours and friends, creating an atmosphere of unity, wellness and community spirit.

The Sebokeng SAPS Station Commander, Brigadier Thembekile Kubone, welcomed the initiative and highlighted the importance of collaboration between SAPS, government departments, community organisations and residents.
She said, “A healthy and united community is a stronger community. Initiatives such as this fitness programme provide an opportunity for people of all ages to take care of their health, build meaningful relationships and strengthen the bonds within our communities. We particularly encourage our youth to remain active and positive, while ensuring our elderly community members are respected, valued and included. Sebokeng SAPS remains committed to working with all stakeholders to create safer, healthier and more caring communities.”
