SEBOKENG.- The Master Zondo Foundation Soccer Tournament kicked off in style this weekend, showcasing a wealth of local talent at the Sebokeng Ajax FC grounds in Zone 12.
The annual event features youth teams ranging from U11s to U19s, all competing under the Emfuleni Local Football Association.
While the standard across the board was high, one name was on everyone’s lips: Kwanele Mashinini.
The 13-year-old Pindene Primary School learner is an exciting midfield maestro for Vaal Gardens Sports Academy (VGSA). Wearing the iconic number 10 shirt, Mashinini was instrumental in his side’s dominant 6-2 victory over Manyaora FC.
His performance, defined by intelligent runs, vision, and a constant threat to the opposition, has already made him a favourite for the Player of the Tournament award. Spectators were quick to compare the youngster to Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng. It is a comparison Mashinini welcomes. He confirmed to Sedibeng Ster Sport that Mofokeng is his idol and that he dreams of one day playing for the Pirates himself.
No doubt he will reach the PSL
“He is a hell of a player. Kwanele joined us at age eight. He is hard-working, committed, and always at training. I have no doubt he will reach the PSL,” said his coach, Kamohelo Masoeu.
With the tournament still underway, all eyes will be on jersey number 10 to see if he can lead his team to further glory.
