SEDIBENG.- Former South African football star and youth empowerment advocate, Siphiwe Tshabalala, spent Heritage Day watching upcoming soccer stars at the historic Conti Ground in Evaton.

Tshabalala attended the inaugural Kurra Cup, where the local community gathered to observe local culture and emerging sporting talent. The event brought a structured football festival to the region, highlighting civic resilience and the social benefits of township sports.

Crowds packed the venue to capacity, with many wearing traditional attire to celebrate Heritage Day.

Festivities started early in the morning and ran throughout the public holiday with entertainment and a full fixture list. The tournament featured several matches, including Conti Juniors FC against Polokong Sporting United.

That game was followed by an U17 fixture between Vaal Gardens Sports Academy and Vaal Mani-kiniki FC, and another match between SFF and Vaal Ladies FC. The main game of the day was between Beke Le Beke FC and Skepe Nketole FC.

Skepe Nketolo were crowned Kurra Cup champions after beating the home team, Beke Le Beke FC, 1-0 in a match that thrilled fans with quality football. Organisers aimed to breathe new life into the local sporting landscape and foster unity and cultural pride, drawing inspiration from historical events like the 1992 Philly’s Games in Tembisa.

Tournament spokesperson Clare Louise du Sart said football remains a central pillar of community life in the Vaal Triangle.

“The objective is to establish a lasting platform where our youth can actively thrive, where families can gather in celebration, and where the rich sporting legacy of the Vaal is proudly carried into the future.”

Tshabalala, famous for his role in the 2010 FIFA World Cup and his foundation’s grassroots work, attended to support the tournament’s developmental aims.

Local youngsters were excited to see the national icon on the touchline, which served as a reminder that their dreams are achievable.

“By investing in these local structures, we are directly investing in the social fabric of Sedibeng, ensuring that the beautiful game continues to change lives long after the final whistle blows,” Du Sart concluded.
