UN plane no mystery
Questions were raised over the sighting of the specially marked plane.
NO, the United Nations (UN) plane spotted flying from Margate Airport last Thursday was not on some secret, local peace mission.
Nina Naude lives near the airport and snapped a photograph of the plane, which she posted on Facebook. This led to the question: Why would a UN plane be on the coast?
However, an insider told the Herald there was nothing special about the plane being in our air space, as it was owned by a private charter company and was probably being used for training pilots. It was a South African registered aircraft with a UN sticker on it and literally flew ‘in and out’.
Interestingly, the UN doesn’t have its own planes and would usually lease a plane from a private charter company.
The UN came into being in 1945, following the devastation of World War 2, with one central mission: the maintenance of international peace and security.
The UN does this by working to prevent conflict; helping parties in conflict make peace; peacekeeping; and creating the conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish.
