New chairperson for Scottburgh Community Policing Forum
Several other vacant positions were also filled.
Community members came together for Scottburgh Saps Community Policing Forum‘s (CPF) special general meeting on August 13.
The meeting was held at the Blue Marlin Hotel in Scottburgh to fill vacant positions in the CPF station executive.
Stakeholders noted that crime in the area appears to be escalating, so it is important to have a functioning CPF with trusted local representatives from the community.
Huzaifah Ebrahim, who was already an active Scottburgh CPF and community member, was elected chairperson.
Ebrahim is a former Saps reservist sergeant who was based at Umzinto Saps for 11 years (1998 to 2010).
He also received numerous awards and certificates for his achievements, and resigned in 2010 due to work commitments.
At the request of Saps to assist in the 2021 unrest, Ebrahim once again got involved and was at the time elected treasurer of Scottburgh CPF.
“I thank the community for having the confidence in me to lead the CPF team. I also want to take the opportunity to thank the security companies who assist us daily,” he said.
Several other positions were filled on the day as well. Scottburgh CPF’s new deputy chairperson is Avanti Low, and the new treasurer is Thumba Govender. Three additional members were also welcomed. They are Dawn Hutchinson, Kim Verburgh and Anand Govender.
Scottburgh Saps station commander Colonel Paul Thwala wished the newly elected members well.
“We aim to reinforce the Scottburgh CPF to once again fight crime hand-in-hand with Saps,” he said.
Thwala also encourages residents to become crime fighters by joining neighbourhood watch groups as patrollers.
